History & Geology

1

Geological Formation

Kirkjufell (Church Mountain) was shaped by a combination of glacial erosion during the Pleistocene epoch and volcanic activity. Its unique symmetrical cone structure makes it the most recognizable mountain in Iceland. The Kirkjufellsfoss waterfall was formed by glacial meltwater flowing over basalt steps, dividing into upper, middle, and lower cascades.

2

Cultural Impact

The mountain is named for its shape, which resembles a church roof. In modern pop culture, it is most famous for its appearance as Arrowhead Mountain in the hit HBO series Game of Thrones, which caused its global popularity to increase exponentially.

Route

Visiting Kirkjufellsfoss is very straightforward. It is recommended to set aside 1-1.5 hours to photograph the waterfall and Kirkjufell mountain from different angles.

1

Arrival & Parking: Park your vehicle at the free parking lot next to the highway

2

Lower Cascades: The first sight will be the lower cascades, perfect for water-level shots

3

Walk up the Trail: Follow the well-maintained gravel path up the slope

4

Classic Viewpoint: Arrive at the viewing platform next to the upper falls, the best spot to capture the waterfall with Kirkjufell in the background

5

Cross the Bridge: Walk across the small bridge above the waterfall to enjoy different lighting and angles

6

Return Descent: Walk back down the gentle path to the parking lot, pausing again to capture the changing light and shadows

Photo Spots

1

Classic Postcard View

Located next to the upper waterfall. Use a wide-angle lens to capture the flowing water as the foreground with the complete Kirkjufell mountain in the background. This is also the exact Game of Thrones filming perspective.

2

The Small Bridge

Standing on the small bridge above the waterfall, you can capture dynamic shots of the water rushing down.

3

Northern Lights Spot

On winter nights, set up your tripod near the parking lot or the classic viewpoint. The extremely low light pollution here makes it a perfect spot for framing the Northern Lights alongside the mountain.

One of the most beautiful waterfalls in Iceland! Although it is small, combined with Mount Kirkjufell in the background, it is truly a photographers paradise. We saw the Northern Lights there, unforgettable!

When we went in winter, the paths were covered in ice, so definitely bring crampons. But seeing the frozen waterfall and snow-capped mountain made it all worth it.

As a Game of Thrones fan, it was so exciting to stand at the foot of Arrowhead Mountain. The trails around the waterfall are very well maintained.

Absolutely stunning scenery, but it can get quite crowded. I recommend going early; we arrived at 7 AM and had the place to ourselves.
